This is a little bit puzzling. Is the motor changing direction that frequently? Any time the direction pin is changed, motor will change direction. With this squarewave on direction pin, it is changing quite frequently.
For STEP input, please see section 6.6. It is OK to not have a square wave on step. You just need a 970ns LOW period followed by 970ns HIGH period to issue a step.
